The face of hunting is changing, as a growing number of New Hampshire women are discovering the challenge and excitement of the hunt. Lorri Menard and Kris Riccardi initially got into hunting because of their husbands, but now both are skilled, successful hunters in their own right. Wildlife Journal tags along with these "woods women" as they prepare for the hunt, scout for game and share their motivations for hunting and the outdoors. Lorri and Kris are both instructors with the Becoming an Outdoors-Woman program; for information, visit www.nhbow.com.

Wild WaysWild Ways: Black Ghost
For fly-anglers, one of the keys to successful salmon fishing is choosing the right fly. While there will always be difference of opinion over what type of fly will get 'em biting, everyone should have a Black Ghost in the flybox. The Black Ghost is a classic streamer pattern -- it's been fished since its invention in the 1920s and has a loyal following to this day. Master fly-tyer Rick Estes teaches Lisa the fine art of tying this traditional fly.

Most anglers know that there are folks working behind the scenes to make New Hampshire's fisheries second to none. But few are privy to the day-to-day activities of fisheries scientists, whose careers center on balancing the predator-prey relationships in New Hampshire's waterbodies. On Wildlife Journal, learn about the amazing arsenal of tools and techniques -- from shocks to sonar -- that fisheries biologists use to determine the size and health of fish populations in the Granite State. Their goal: to enhance both fishery health and angler satisfaction.

Wild PlacesWild Places: Miller State Park
The oldest state park in New Hampshire, Miller State Park in Peterborough is located at the summit of Pack Monadnock, with a peak of 2,290 feet. Three foot trails lead to the summit, including the Wapack Trail, which will take you south through wild country all the way to Mt. Watatic in Ashburnham, Massachusetts. The view from Pack Mondanock extends some 70 miles -- on clear days, you can see the Boston skyline in one direction and Mount Washington in the other. During hawk migration in September, Miller State Park is a popular spot for hawk-watchers, with maybe a little leaf-peeping on the side. Click here for more about Miller State Park.
